I was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario before falling in love with an American and moving to Philadelphia. I completed my doctorate in Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter (UK) in 2007 where I conducted research on marketization in Syria. When I am not researching, writing, teaching, or being a father to my two young children, I play hockey in a local adult league.
