The Beaver College Art Gallery is pleased to present mixed media work by New York artist Jennifer Bolande from October 27 to November 23. The exhibition will open on Wednesday, October 26, with a reception from 7:00-9:00 PM in honor of the artist. Members of the press are cordially invited to attend the reception and also to meet with the gallery’s new director, Paula Marincola.
The artist also will give an informal lecture about her work on Wednesday, November 2 at 4:00 PM in the Little Theatre located on campus. Admission is free.

Bolande’s highly detailed, multi-keyed works exist in the intriguing space between photography and sculpture. “She has recently emerged as one of the most compelling younger artists working today,” notes Marincola who organized the exhibition. “Her work has generated a great deal of critical and curatorial interest. Our art gallery is the first institution to assemble an overview of her production since the early 1980s.”
Bolande’s assemblages are constructed from fragmented photographic images and objects that occupy the often overlooked periphery of contemporary society – refrigerators, amplifiers, sandwich boards, faux logs, and scraps of other kinds of cast-off materials such as carpeting, bubble wrap and wooden shims. The sculptures’ reticent and idiosyncratic character demands the viewer’s close attention as it is based upon an invented syntax derived from the margins or our media culture’s landscape.

Critic Ronald Jones has written that Bolande’s art “…reactivates our desire to interpret beyond the bounds of the predetermined. There is a private iconography. Yet she is always careful to convey, often literally, the invitation to see in her art. In this artist’s hands, unexpected juxtapositions and conjunctions touch off a series of possible meanings at once poetic and humorous.”
Bolande, currently represented by Metro Pictures, New York, attended Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. She has had one-person exhibitions at The Kitchen, Nature Morte, and Metro Pictures, all located in New York and at the Robbin Lockett Gallery in Chicago. Bolande also has shown internationally in group exhibitions in St. Louis, Buffalo, Aspen, Chicago, Vienna, Milan, Antwerp, Geneva, Dusseldorf, and Amsterdam among others. Her work also has been recently reviewed in Art in America, Flash Art, and Artscribe magazines.

Rafael Ferrer: Recent Paintings
April 10 – May 1, 1985
April 10 – May 1, 1985
The Spruance Art Center is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings by Rafael Ferrer, one of the country’s leading contemporary artists, on the Beaver campus Wednesday, April 10 with a gallery talk by the artist at 4:00 PM followed by an opening reception from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. The public is cordially invited to attend both events.
This exhibition offers an unusual opportunity to see a one-person exhibition of Ferrer’s current work in the Philadelphia area.
“Rafael Ferrer: Recent Paintings,” Spruance Art Center
As a native of Puerto Rico, Ferrer’s paintings are intrinsically related to his tropical origins, yet deal directly with the present. His large scale paintings all contain figures in a variety of dramatic tropical landscape settings: beaches, palm groves, a garden, or a shady terrace. The color is starting in its energy and expresses a deep personal vision. What emerges is a scene removed from the real world while paradoxically conceived through the idea of a direct experience. In a recent interview, Ferrer stated that what is most important are the values of a culture instilled at an early age and it is his growing up period that dominates his perception of reality in his art. Zina Holdsmith, Gallery Director, states that one of the exciting experiences in viewing the paintings is in their ability to transform the figures and settings into works of art that reflect these deep passions of the artist and are able to arouse these passions in others.
Ferrer is a great admirer of Philadelphia where he has lived since 1967. His work has been included in innumerable one-person and group exhibitions in museums, galleries and universities throughout this country and abroad including the Hirshhorn Museum, Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C.; the Venice Biennial Exhibition, Venice, Italy; and the Biennial of Contemporary American Painting and Sculpture, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City. Selected public collections include the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.

Ferrer’s lecture is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts; his exhibition which continues through May 1 is supported by the Beaver College Forum Committee and Department of Fine Arts, and through the courtesy of the Nancy Hoffman Gallery, New York City.

Carol Summers Woodcuts
December 5 – 19, 1980
December 5 – 19, 1980
The Richard E. Fuller Gallery is pleased to present Carol Summers, one of America’s foremost printmakers, at Beaver College from December 5 through December 19. He will conduct a demonstration at 1:30 PM, December 5, in the Spruance Art Center, and an opening reception will be held at 7:30 PM that same evening in the art gallery. The public is invited to attend both events without charge.
From among the various print mediums, Mr. Summers concentrates on woodcuts which he feels offer simplicity, directness, and naturalness of process. His vocabulary of organic forms, landscape imagery and the human torso reflect the natural world, yet coalesce into a visual experience of luminous color and fluidity of form that defies specific definition.
Mr. Summers is representated in major museum collections in countries throughout the world including France, Italy, India, Sweden, Switzerland and England. Selected museum collections in the United States include the Boston Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., Philadelphia Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
A recipient of a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1959 and a Fulbright Fellowship for study in Italy in 1961, Mr. Summers participated in a teaching tour of universities in India in 1974.
This exhibition is sponsored by the Forum Committee and the department of fine arts at Beaver College, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Multi-media Small Works Exhibition
November 12 – 30, 1980
November 12 – 30, 1980
The Richard E. Fuller Gallery is pleased to present a multi-media small works exhibition from November 12 through November 30, 1980. The exhibition will be open on Wednesday, November 12 with a symposium at 4:00 PM, followed by a reception from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The public is invited.
Virginia Butera, assistant to the director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, has selected the work of area artists to participate in this exhibition. The aim of this juried multi-media small works exhibition has been to provide the broadest opportunity for artists by including painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, sculpture and crafts which demonstrate a diversity of techniques while concentration on alternatives and innovative approaches to conventional scale, spatial relationships and esthetic ideas.
Miss Butera received her M.A. in art history from Johns Hopkins University. She was a 1976-77 Smithsonian Museum Fellow at the National Collection of Fine Arts, and has curated exhibitions at the National Collection of Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Print Club of Philadelphia. She was a National Endowment for the Arts assistant in the department of prints, drawing, and photography at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The exhibition is supported in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
Lenore Malen: Paintings and Collages

October 8 – 29, 1980
The Richard E. Fuller Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of paints and collages by Ms. Lenore Malen at Beaver College from October 8 through October 19. The public is invited to attend the opening reception Wednesday, October 8 at 4:30 PM.
“Lenore Malen: Paintings and Collages,” Richard E. Fuller GalleryMs. Malen’s large scale paintings combine the delicacy of areas drawn in crayon separated by heavy vertical ridges of transparent acrylic; the result is a modified grid structure reflecting qualities of luminous color and light which the artist relates to the experience of landscape, perceived as a “scrim of light.” The pastel drawings employ a similar structure with the addition of small photographs and three-dimensional units collages onto the surface. Viewed with the paintings, they provide an interesting variation extending the idea of illusion and reality.
A participant in numerous group shows, Ms. Malen has had solo exhibitions in New York and Sweden, as well as the Marian Locks Gallery in Philadelphia.

She has acted as both panelist and moderator before groups, as well as on TV. She has been on the teaching staff of several colleges and frequently contributes articles on contemporary criticism for major art journals.

The Richard E. Fuller Gallery is pleased to present Jack Beal, contemporary realist artist, who will hold an exhibition of lithographs, silkscreen prints and linoleum cuts from March 5 through March 26.
Derived from landscape and still-life subject matter, Mr. Beal’s prints assert their uniqueness through the interaction of rich color, highly defined light/dark patterns, and a dramatic spatial structure whereby objects are viewed from above or below rather than straight on, often with a strong diagonal emphasis.
“Jack Beal: Prints,” Richard E. Fuller Gallery
In addition to numerous one-man and group exhibitions in museums and universities throughout the country, Mr. Beal is represented in many private and public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 1977 he executed a major mural project which is permanently installed with the Department of Labor, Washington, D.C.
This exhibition is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Forum Committee and Department of Fine Arts at Beaver College.
