Ms. Malen’s large scale paintings combine the delicacy of areas drawn in crayon separated by heavy vertical ridges of transparent acrylic; the result is a modified grid structure reflecting qualities of luminous color and light which the artist relates to the experience of landscape, perceived as a “scrim of light.” The pastel drawings employ a similar structure with the addition of small photographs and three-dimensional units collages onto the surface. Viewed with the paintings, they provide an interesting variation extending the idea of illusion and reality.
A participant in numerous group shows, Ms. Malen has had solo exhibitions in New York and Sweden, as well as the Marian Locks Gallery in Philadelphia.
