Jeri Lynne Johnson, conductor of the Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra, and Dr. Cynthia Folio, a professor of music studies at Temple University, will serve as guest speakers for Dr. Elizabeth Murphy’s Women Composers course this March.

Johnson, who will visit campus on Wednesday, March 2, from 9 to 10 p.m., blended artistic excellence, innovation, cultural diversity, and community engagement when she founded the Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra in 2008. Since then, she has collected numerous awards, led orchestras around the world, and became the first African American woman to win an international conducting prize: the Taki Concordia Conducting Fellowship.

Dr. Folio, who’s set to speak on Wednesday, March 16, from 7 to 9 p.m., is an accomplished flutist, theorist, and composer. Focusing much of her work and research on jazz and contemporary music, she is the recipient of the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Temple University Faculty Award for Creative Achievement, and 22 consecutive awards for composition from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers.
