The Creative Writing major at Arcadia University fosters emergent writers and helps them develop their craft through participation in strategically sequenced writing workshops and through the intense study of literature from a craft perspective. Students in particular get a sense of writing in the 21st century and build skills in multiple genres.
Through this program, students will assess the value of writing including the importance of engaging with the diversity of literary voices, cultural experiences, and perspectives; assess the value of writing; develop and demonstrate through writing submissions a strong foundation in the fiction and poetry genres; study and produce written work in many literary genres including fiction, poetry, non-fiction, children’s writing, screenwriting; gain a deep understanding of and apply craft terms such as narrative, point of view, character, conflict, tone, theme, etc, to the study of literary works, the work of peers and their own work; analyze and gain an appreciation of a broad and diverse selection of literary works from a craft perspective, examining the writers’ craft choices; develop as a writer in a supportive, inclusive and active community of writers through classroom interaction in writing workshop courses, one-on-one conferences with instructors, and through participation in visiting writer events and workshops.
Upon completion of the program, students will have cultivated the above mentioned skills and will be prepared for a career of their choosing.
Develop your ability to read and write critically about literature. Analyze the relationship of literary form to thematic and rhetorical function through examination of poetry, drama, and prose fiction.
Strengthen your poetry and fiction writing skills. You will submit your work for peer and instructor critique, with analysis of published poems and short fiction for style, interpretation, and techniques in relation to subject and intention.
Develop a manuscript that may or not be inspired by previous work related to your course of study. You will participate in lectures on elements of craft and form, whole class discussions of elements of craft based on assigned readings, development, and peer review session. You will get feedback from a professor or your peers. Produce and revise your manuscript throughout the semester and critique other students’ work-in-progress.
Learn how to do research relating to English Studies topics. You will apply your research skills to different writing tasks that will require critical thinking and literary analysis.
