TEDxArcadia is an independently organized TEDx event hosted at Arcadia University and created by students in the Honors Program. Organized as part of an honors class, the event brings together speakers from both the Arcadia community and beyond to share ideas, experiences, and perspectives.
Centered around the theme “Moving Towards More,” TEDx Arcadia invites speakers and attendees alike to explore growth, possibility, and the pursuit of something greater—whether in personal development, community impact, innovation, or global change. Through a series of engaging talks, the event aims to spark meaningful conversations and inspire new ways of thinking within and beyond the Arcadia community.

Meet Our Speakers

Gary Heidt
For 33 years, Garreth Heidt has designed classes at the middle, high school, and college level. He engages his students through instructional approaches employing Design Thinking Project-Based Learning as means to a liberal education.
Mr. Heidt’s classes blend traditional and progressive methods to develop learner’s skills in mindful observation, critical viewing, civil discussion, and problem solving.
A 1990 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Temple University, Mr Heidt holds a BA in English, a Masters in Curriculum and Instructional Design, and has completed numerous classes with Bard College’s Institute for Writing and Thinking.
In addition to his work in the classroom, Mr. Heidt spent 27 years coaching speech and debate, developing regional and national champions in various competitions. He has also helped start his district’s Robotics and Esports Teams. Mr. Heidt blogs (infrequently) at www.onlyconnects.wordpress.com and pvhsnovalab.com.

Coach Regan Sammons
Regan Sammons is the current Head Coach of the field hockey program at Arcadia University, where she competed as a student-athlete just a few years ago. Regan graduated in 2023 with her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sport Management, and recently completed her Master’s degree in Early Education, grounding her coaching philosophy in both human development and leadership.
In just three years, she transitioned from wearing the jersey to leading the program, bringing a unique perspective shaped by her experience on both sides of the whistle. As an alum, she is deeply committed to building a culture rooted in accountability, growth, and competitive excellence. Her leadership centers on developing student-athletes not only as competitors, but as confident, resilient individuals prepared for life beyond sport. A lifelong athlete who has navigated the demands of Type 1 Diabetes since early childhood, Regan’s resilience and discipline deeply inform her approach to mentorship and leadership.
Regan views coaching as an extension of education—where identity, confidence, and character are built daily. Her journey reflects her belief that leadership is not handed to you, but earned through consistency, character, and courage.

Dr. Muhamad Aly Rifai
Muhamad Aly Rifai, MD, CPE, DFAPA, FACP, FACLP
Dr. Muhamad Aly Rifai is a physician entrepreneur, board certified psychiatrist, internist, and addiction medicine specialist, and CEO of Blue Mountain Psychiatry. A first-generation immigrant who was raised in Aleppo, Syria, he survived civil war and learned early what fear does to the human mind.
Trained at the University of Virginia and the National Institute of Mental Health, he became a national voice for telehealth, precision psychiatry, and neurotechnology that measures brain activity in real time. His clinical work pairs rigorous medicine with deep humanity, including advanced care for people living with severe depression and trauma. After facing a public federal prosecution and earning full acquittal at trial, he turned pain into advocacy for due process, ethical leadership, and protection of professionals under pressure.
Dr. Rifai brings a message built on courage, truth, and action, and calls audiences to move toward more through discipline, integrity, and service.

Gina DiMarco
Gina DiMarco, author of Laurel’s Diary, is a trauma-informed speaker and nonprofit consultant with more than 15 years of experience advancing mission-driven work and advocating for vulnerable populations. She holds a dual degree in English and Communication from La Salle University.
Her professional background spans fundraising strategy, development operations, and communications, with a focus on helping nonprofit organizations strengthen donor engagement, increase revenue, and build sustainable infrastructures. Gina has worked with a diverse range of organizations, including homeless shelters, animal welfare groups, and social service nonprofits, bringing a nuanced understanding of the challenges facing community-based work. Most recently, she stepped into the role of Executive Director for the Haverford Education Foundation as well as Director of Development for TEKnowledge Worldwide.
Through her consulting practice, she partners with organizations to translate vision into actionable, results-driven strategies.
Her work centers on emotional literacy, survivor-informed care, and sustainable leadership in community-based organizations. Gina brings a grounded, accessible approach to complex topics, helping individuals and institutions move from awareness to action.
Faculty Organizer: Celeste Walker

Celeste Walker is an actor, educator, and theatre director, with a BFA from Kutztown University and an MFA in Acting from The Actor’s Studio Drama School at the New School University in New York. She is a lifetime member of The Actors Studio and a member of Actors Equity. Ms. Walker was an Adjunct Professor of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies at Arcadia University for 23 years. She retired from Arcadia in the spring of 2024 and returned this semester to create her final TEDx event. She served as an Adjunct Representative on Arcadia University’s Faculty Senate and as an At Large Delegate for United Academics of Philadelphia. She was on the bargaining team for Arcadia University’s first Collective Bargaining Contract and was on the team for their second successful contract in 2023.
Celeste developed and taught innovative interdisciplinary curriculum at Arcadia. They included the following: Inside-Out: Acting Behind the Walls; Laughing Matters, Shakespeare on Stage with Seniors; Gender Bending and Film, Flying Solo: The Art of Solo Performance, Radical Arts: The Study and Practice of the Arts for Social Change; Italy on Film (Honors travel course to Rome) and Italiano Americano: Philly Style.
For the Honors department at Arcadia, she has, along with her students, organized six prior TEDx Events. She remains an Adjunct Professor of Communication Studies at Montgomery County Community College where she teaches online courses from her home in Bethany Beach, Delaware.
As a professional actor, Celeste has appeared off Broadway and in theatres in New York City, New Jersey, the Lehigh Valley, California, and Philadelphia. Presently, she is touring her third solo show, GHOSTED, nationwide. GHOSTED, written and performed by Walker, directed by Jessica Lynn Johnson, had its World Premiere at United Solo Festival in New York City in April 2024, was featured at The Philadelphia Fringe Festival in September 2024, was performed at the Civic Theatre in Allentown, PA in November of 2024 at the Binge Fringe Festival at the Santa Monica Playhouse in March 2025 and at the Dickens Parlour Theatre in Ocean View Delaware, in May 2025. GHOSTED has been selected to be a part of the Pittsburgh Fringe Festival in March and at the Atlanta Fringe Festival in May of this year.
Meet Our Students

Ava Betson
Ava Betson (she/her) is a senior Psychology major and Public Health minor as well as a member of Arcadia University’s Honors Program and Psi Chi, the national Psychology Honors Society. As a future health professional, Ava is passionate about bridging health inequities for marginalized communities, particularly women, LGBTQ+ individuals, disabled individuals, and racial minorities. At Arcadia, Ava has served as a Teaching Assistant for Experimental Psychology I under the supervision of Dr Logan Fields for approximately 2 years, helping students gain an understanding of experimental procedures, scientific writing, and preparing them to run their own experiments. Ava had implemented her own IRB-approved experimental study on the well-documented bias of pain perception for women and people of color, and is currently writing a literature review-based thesis on fandom involvement and social well-being for autistic women. Additionally, Ava worked at Arcadia’s Learning Resource Network for 2 years, helping administer exams to students with academic accommodations, further emphasizing her desire to improve equitable access for underserved populations.
Aside from her professional and research experience at Arcadia, Ava served as an Intern at Lakeside Girls Academy, a therapeutic, trauma-informed high school for girls with significant life stressors. Under the supervision of a licensed professional counselor, Ava was responsible for a caseload of six students, administered one-on-one therapy sessions, individual and group life and career skills training, and participated in clinical meetings with Lakeside’s therapeutic, social work, and teaching staff.
Outside of academics, Ava is passionate about an eclectic array of hobbies and interests, from antique doll collecting, sculpting, jewelry making, sustainable fashion, collecting tea and attending tearooms, tattoos, alternative rock music from the 80s and 90s, animation, renaissance fairs, and being a self-proclaimed horror movie enthusiast. She is a strong believer in the power of the arts and self expression in enhancing and engaging communities, fighting for social justice causes, and uniting people across cultures, and hopes to open her own small business selling her art in the near future.

Stephanie Binek
Stephanie Binek is a sophomore in the Honors Program at Arcadia University, majoring in Biology on the Pre-Medical track.
She has been heavily involved in academics, athletics, and campus life. She currently serves as the Pre-Health Club treasurer and the Honors community outreach coordinator. Through her academics she has made Distinguished Dean's List and helps students by being a biology tutor. She is also a committed athlete on Arcadia's softball team.
Aside from academics, she enjoys baking, playing with her cat Vixen, and painting.

Karah Daniels
Karah Daniels is a senior in the Honors Program at Arcadia University, majoring in Early Education with a Japanese minor.
Karah is very passionate about helping students grow and bringing the love of reading to the classroom. She is in the Leadership Circle, SAAC, and the National Society of Leadership and Success at Arcadia.
Karah is also part of Arcadia University's Esports Team. She plays on the Super Smash bros Team and is part of the Esports committee team.

Payton Goltz
Payton Goltz is a Senior in Arcadia's Honors Program majoring in International Relations, Diplomacy and Law and double minoring in French and Law and Public Policy with a 4.0 GPA.
She currently serves as The Editor-in-Chief of The Compass, Arcadia's Scholarly Journal. Last year, she co-founded Arcadia's Pre Law Association and currently serves as The President. She is a member of The Pi Sigma Alpha and Sigma Iota Rho Honors Societies, and will be inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Delta Phi Honors Societies this Spring. She is a French tutor at Arcadia's Learning Resource Network and a member of Arcadia's Model United Nations Team.
This year, she was selected as the recipient of The Maude A. Farran '38 and William Benner Farran Award for the senior who is most proficient in pre-law studies. She was also nominated for the Senior Golden Disc Award. After graduating from Arcadia, Payton plans to take at least one gap year to gain professional experience and then attend law school.

Madison Kubicz
Madison Kubicz is a senior in the Honors Program at Arcadia University, majoring in Healthcare Administration, where she has been actively involved in both academics and campus life.
She was inducted into the Spanish Honors Society and is a member of the Latine Society, reflecting her passion for language and learning.
Madison also serves as captain of the Arcadia University field hockey team Through her experiences, she has built a foundation in discipline, collaboration, and leadership as she prepares for graduation.

Alyssa Montanez
Alyssa Montanez is a sophomore in the Honors Program at Arcadia University, majoring in Biochemistry with a concentration in Pre-Medical studies. She currently serves as a Study Abroad Mentor (STAMP), supporting students interested in studying in London, where she spent the spring semester of her freshman year. On campus, Alyssa is actively involved in the university’s Pre-Health Club and has been selected to serve as Vice President for the 2026–2027 academic year. She is also involved in clinical research at the university’s Shoulder Research Center, where she assists with data collection and analysis for an upcoming project examining motor excitability in the musculature surrounding rotator cuff–related shoulder pain.
In addition to her research, Alyssa is a member of Arcadia University’s S-STEM Program, funded by the National Science Foundation, which provides scholarships to academically talented, low-income students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Through this program, she was selected to attend the 2025 S-STEM National Conference in San Diego, California. The annual conference serves as a hub for community-building within the S-STEM network, offering scholars opportunities to engage in professional development, explore career pathways, and share their work through poster presentations.
Outside of her academic and medical interests, Alyssa is also a proud Elks Scholar representing Lodge #2434 and was selected as a 2024 Most Valuable Student (MVS) scholarship recipient. Committed to community service and charitable engagement, she currently volunteers with Grow-A-Row, a nonprofit initiative that grows and harvests fresh produce to donate to food banks and community organizations to help reduce food insecurity.

Ethan Piperno
Ethan Piperno is a student in the Honors Program at Arcadia University, majoring in Biology.
He is a member of Arcadia’s Esports Team, where he competes in Overwatch as part of a nationally ranked #18 team.
Outside of academics, Ethan enjoys playing piano and participating in recreational sports, including soccer at Arcadia. He is also involved in the Astronomy Club, reflecting his broader interest in science beyond the classroom.
