John R. Hoffman, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Biology. Previously, he served as the University's Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs from 2016-18, the Founding Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2013-16, Associate Provost for Accreditation, Assessment, and Research from 2012-13, Founding Dean of the Arcadia University College of Business, Health & Sciences from 2009–11, and the Dean of Graduate Studies from 2008-11. Dr. Hoffman received the 2016 Pennsylvania Counseling Association Outstanding Administrator Award.
Dr. Hoffman received his B.S. in Biology from the Lyman Briggs School at Michigan State University in 1987, and a Ph.D. in Developmental Neurobiology from the University of Michigan in 1992. He trained at the Medical College of Pennsylvania (now Drexel University School of Medicine). Dr. Hoffman is a past-president of the Philadelphia area chapter of the Society for Neuroscience and served a three-year term on the Society for Neuroscience’s Committee for Neuroscience Literacy.
Dr. Hoffman joined the Arcadia University Faculty as an Adjunct Professor in 1993, began full-time as an Assistant Professor in 1995, and was promoted to the rank of Professor in 2004. In 2001, he was awarded the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching. During his time in the Department of Biology, he served as chair from 2001 – 2007 and maintained an active research program receiving more than $800,000 in extramural funding. He teaches in the General Biology sequence, Research Methods in Biology, Human Physiology, and upper-level courses in Neurobiology, Histology, Junior Seminar, Senior Seminar, and a University Seminar on Scientific Ethics.
Since 1995, he has mentored 63 Arcadia undergraduate students in the completion of empirical research-based senior thesis projects. The significance of the student accomplishments is illustrated by the fact that Arcadia University students have been co-authors on seventeen presentations at national or international meetings and seven peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Hoffman continues to promote university-wide opportunities for faculty and faculty-student research, scholarly, and creative activities.
