Sean Scott: The Ruth C. Grant Distinguished Achievement Award in the Fine Arts
Award established by Ruth C. Grant ’37
To the senior art major who has displayed artistic excellence in any of the disciplines offered in the Art and Design Program.
Artists and designers always hope to build a community, one in which they feel heard, understood, and can do the same for others. Sean Scott is one of the “unofficial” leaders of Arcadia’s Art and Design community, always ready to help a fellow student by way of an insightful critique, a digital trick, or a hilarious comment. The latter sometimes uttered at a whisper, so be sure to listen closely. As a creative community leader, Sean is always prepared to help the university at large, as evident in both his pivotal role as designer of many of the Theater posters you have seen campus-wide over the years and that as a mentor for the students coming up through the Art and Design program. Sean is the creative voice of a generation, quick with a comment on the mixing of words and pictures, what pen is most suitable for inking, or testing your knowledge of professional wrestling.
Rebecca Hoyer: The Spruance-Daumier Award
Award established by Dr. Lessing J. Rosenwald
For excellence in art by a senior, this award was established for the late Benton Spruance, printmaker and former chair of the Art and Design Department.
Rebecca Hoyer is the heartbeat of the Arcadia Art and Design Program. Stop by the Mac Lab or the Spruance Gallery and you are sure to run into Becca assisting in an exhibition, helping a classmate, discussing a current assignment, mentoring a student, working on a lesson plan or design project. Oftentimes, doing several of these things all at once and all the while enjoying every minute of it. I cannot help but think when Arcadia first envisioned their Art and Design Program, they pictured Becca, one minute branding a pizza box or designing a card game for children, the next photographing her classmates at work in their studios, or taking a moment, however brief, to sit outside and breathe in the green, all accumulating into the design work of a professional educator and artist.
Molly Russom: The Friends of Arcadia University Art Gallery Award

One student nominator mentioned that “Dr. Boyd has had a very positive impact on my learning experience, especially during lab sessions. She consistently provided helpful feedback and practical tips that made clinical skills feel more manageable and easier to remember.” Another student said, “Dr. Boyd always comes in with a smile and ready to teach. She is always empathetic and knowledgeable. You can tell she really wants her students to succeed and participate.” And, a colleague added, “Dr. Kate Boyd has done more for our program than many full-time faculty, and she has done so with heart, integrity, and joy. In nominating her for this award, a student said “I would not be as successful as I am today if it weren’t for Dr. Swanson. I request to have her as my academic advisor because she was extremely personable and supportive. She’s passionate and effective in all of the courses that she teaches. Even in graduate school, I often find myself referencing previous lectures from her.” Another echoed this sentiment saying” Throughout my journey as an undergrad, Dr. Swanson has been extremely committed to see me and my peers learn and grow and students. When I was struggling early on in my college career, she went out of her way to get me on track and made extra office time so I could grasp the materials. You can tell she loves to teach as she demonstrates visible passion and excitement for the subjects she teaches.” A colleague mentioned that “Across every dimension of her work, Christina brings the same generous spirit and intellectual rigor, and I cannot think of a more fitting recipient for this award.” And neither can the Faculty Awards Committee!
