Turn Your Second Year Into a Life-Changing Journey
Not ready to study abroad your first year? Arcadia’s Second-Year Study Abroad Experience (SYSAE) gives you the chance to go global in your sophomore year without missing out.
Maybe your first year was about getting grounded: finding your rhythm, figuring out your major, and adjusting to college life. Now you’re ready for more. With SYSAE, instead of heading back to campus, you’ll start your second year with a passport in hand and a world of opportunity ahead.
SYSAE lets you spend your sophomore year abroad in destinations like London, Spain, or Italy, living alongside other Arcadia students in centrally located housing. Programs are designed to keep you on track academically while offering rich cultural discovery. Whether your classes are taught by Arcadia faculty or respected local instructors, the learning is immersive and often hands-on. You might study art history inside centuries-old galleries, practice your language skills in local cafés, or explore global issues through community-based research.
You’re never on your own. From early planning through your return, Arcadia’s dedicated team provides support at every step. They’ll assist with course selection, credit transfer, travel prep, and cultural adjustment. On-site staff are there throughout the experience, and you’ll be part of a student community that shares your curiosity and sense of adventure.
SYSAE is more than a semester abroad. It’s a full-year experience that helps you grow personally and academically. You’ll earn credits toward your Arcadia degree, gain confidence and independence, and return with a global perspective that sets you apart.
Make your second year your breakout year. With SYSAE, you don’t just continue your education—you expand it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is SYSAE?
SYSAE stands for Second-Year Study Abroad Experience, a unique Arcadia program that lets you study abroad during your sophomore year. You’ll spend the fall semester in London, England; Granada, Spain; or Perugia, Italy, earning credits that count toward your degree while living and learning in a whole new culture.
Who can do SYSAE?
SYSAE is invitation-only. If you're eligible, you’ll be selected during the admissions review process, based on things like academic performance, maturity, and your interests. There’s no extra application, just keep an eye on your inbox a few weeks after you're admitted to Arcadia.
Why study abroad sophomore year?
Most schools make you wait until junior year to study abroad. Not Arcadia. With SYSAE, you get an early global experience, helping you build confidence, independence, and a global mindset – all while staying on track academically.
Where can I go with SYSAE?
SYSAE students choose from three incredible locations:
- London, England – Big city life, history, and theater
- Granada, Spain – Sunny skies, Moorish architecture, and tapas
- Perugia, Italy – Cobblestone streets, pasta-making, and art history
Wherever you go, your city becomes your classroom!
What classes will I take?
Courses are taught by Arcadia faculty and local experts. They're designed for your major or general education, and they include real-world experiences, like studying art in an Italian museum or exploring Spanish culture in local markets. You’ll earn full credit toward your degree.
Can I do an internship or research?
Yes! All SYSAE locations offer ways to get hands-on experience – from internships to service learning to field research. You’ll build your résumé while living abroad.
How much does SYSAE cost?
SYSAE is cost-neutral. Your tuition, housing, and financial aid apply just like they would on campus. You’ll only need to cover things like airfare, meals, local travel, and personal expenses.
Where will I live?
You’ll live in centrally located apartments or residence halls, usually with other Arcadia students. You’ll have access to shared kitchens and common areas, giving you the chance to build friendships and explore together.
Can I do Preview the World and SYSAE?
Yes, and it’s a great idea! Preview the World is a one-week spring break trip for first-year students. It’s the perfect way to get a taste of international travel before going abroad for a full semester with SYSAE.
Is it safe?
Absolutely. Arcadia has over 75 years of experience in study abroad and global education. You’ll have on-site staff, orientation, 24/7 emergency support, and help whenever you need it.
Do I need to speak another language?
Nope. All courses are taught in English. If you’re heading to Spain or Italy, learning a few key phrases is helpful, but language proficiency is not required.
Will SYSAE delay my graduation?
No. All courses you take during SYSAE count toward your degree. You’ll stay on track academically while having an experience you’ll never forget.
Not sure a full semester abroad is right for you?
No worries. Arcadia has a variety of summer or week-long study abroad programs that would be right up your alley.
