The Medical Spanish Certificate Program equips healthcare students with essential Spanish language skills and cultural competencies for effectively serving Latino and Hispanic communities in the U.S. The curriculum emphasizes medical vocabulary, patient-provider communication, and socio-cultural awareness—enhancing trust, empathy, and equity in healthcare delivery.
Designed to support communication in clinical, administrative, and outpatient settings, the program also advances the principles of Language Justice. By improving their ability to interact with Spanish-speaking patients, students not only strengthen their professional qualifications but also expand their career opportunities.
Open to undergraduate students majoring in Health Sciences, Public Health, or related fields.
Two Certificate Levels are available:
Each certificate consists of 4 courses (16 credits). Students may complete either level independently based on their proficiency.
If a student has questions about their starting proficiency level, please contact Dr. Kate Bonin bonink@arcadia.edu or Gabriela Segal segalg@arcadia.edu.

“The class helped me understand the difference between casual Spanish and what is appropriate in healthcare setting.”
“I loved how the focus was on patient interaction, like how to show empathy, ask sensitive questions, and clarify symptoms.”
