Assistant Professor of Forensic Science Dr. Shane Tobe co-authored a research article titled “Microbial Composition Analyses by 16S rRNA Sequencing: A Proof of Concept Approach to Provenance Determination of Archaeological Ochre,” which was published by the Public Library of Science (PLOS) on Oct. 18. Dr. Tobe co-authored this article with Drs. Claire Lenehan, Renee Smith, and Rachel Popelka-Filcoff from Flinders University in South Australia. The publication is supported by the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE) Fellowship.
The study analyzes the application of 16S rRNA Sequencing of microbial DNA to identify archeological samples, using Australian Indigenous ochre as an example. This demonstrates how trace microbial DNA can be used as a source of information in archaeological provenance studies.
