Dr. Favian Guertin-Martín, associate professor of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice, published “Tapping into Environmental Harm in Brewing: An Exploration of Pollution and Waste in Beer Production” in the Oct. 1 Journal of the American Society of Criminology Division on Critical Criminology. In the article, Dr. Guertin-Martín addresses environmental issues that have arisen with the expansion of the craft brewing industry, such as the consumption of freshwater and disposal practices of wastewater within brewing facilities.
Last year, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on Dr. Guertin-Martin’s course, “Untapped: Exploring the Socio and Cultural World of Beer,” which teaches students about the socio-economic impact of craft brewing in the region and provides a hands-on brewing experience. From that story, he was invited to participate in the newspaper’s annual Brewvitational, where he and other craft beer experts ranked 82 local beers.
