What graduate program are you in at Arcadia?

Master of Science in Forensic Science

What are your undergraduate and/or previous degree details?

I earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from South Dakota State University.

Why did you choose Arcadia and/or your particular graduate program?

I chose Arcadia’s Forensic Science program because it is accredited by FEPAC, which means the program upholds high standards in forensic science education. I also liked the partnership with the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education (CFSRE), which allowed me to work with instrumentation used in the forensic science field. I was also fortunate enough to complete my thesis at the CFSRE.

What have you gained during your time here?

I gained a lot of skills and knowledge during my time here. I learned about LC/MS/MS/MS, GC-MS, LC-QTOF, and how to extract samples from blood and urine. I also learned how to write reports for court and participated in a moot court experience where I practiced testifying on a case I worked on during my internship. In addition, I attended the American Academy of Forensic Sciences conference in New Orleans, where I learned about current issues in the field and connected with vendors and potential employers.

What is your proudest accomplishment to date?

My proudest accomplishment during my time at Arcadia was completing my thesis, “The 6-AM Conundrum,” which examined 6-acetylmorphine (6-AM) and morphine in urine. Since 6-AM is a metabolite of heroin, my research explored the potential presence of 6-AM in urine specimens where it was not expected.

What is a challenge you’ve had to overcome to get to this point?

One challenge I had to overcome was managing my time at the CFSRE while completing my thesis because other scientists at the center also used my instrument. Balancing my class schedule with the availability of the lab made it difficult, some weeks, to find enough time to complete my work.

What do you do when you’re not in class?

When I’m not in class, I enjoy reading books, especially fantasy and romance novels. I also like putting together puzzles, baking, and watching video game playthroughs.

What are some things you’re hoping to do after graduating?

After graduating, I hope to work as a forensic toxicologist in a crime lab. I have already interviewed for a Forensic Toxicologist position at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself or your Arcadia experience?

My experiences at Arcadia and the CFSRE helped prepare me for a future career in forensic toxicology while giving me hands-on opportunities to grow both professionally and personally.
