Knight to Know: Janaye Seldon ’29 Breaks Out of Her Shell by Attending Conferences, Joining Clubs, and Embracing Regional Culture

Janaye Seldon ’29, an Education PreK-4 major, considered herself an introvert when she chose Arcadia. It was during a campus visit that she fell in love with the culture and opportunities available, leading to the belief that she could break out of her shell.
“I liked that [Arcadia] was a small enough campus to support me,” she said. “I am grateful that I was able to receive a scholarship. It’s the best decision I could have made for myself.”
The Baltimore native received a scholarship from the Social Action and Justice Education Fellowship (SAJE) program. She recently had the opportunity to attend the 2026 Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development (PHENND) conference with Dr. Keisha Robinson, director of SAJE. PHENND is a consortium of over 30 colleges and universities in the greater Philadelphia area.
“This showed me that I am capable of learning at this level and all my hard work in high school paid off,” Seldon said.
Seldon is keen on trying new things while at Arcadia and recommends the same for her classmates. The first-year student has joined ArcadiaFTK, a student organization that raises money for childhood cancer research; the Education Club; and the Black Awareness Society.
“Make sure that while you are at Arcadia to try new things,” she said. “Even if you are not sure you might like it at first, it is important you test your comfortability and expand your mind to new things.”
In addition, Seldon has gotten acquainted with Philadelphia, a big city similar to her hometown of Baltimore.
“I take it upon myself to explore parts of Philly and try to find new places,” she explained. “If I could tell anyone anything it’s to do what you never in a million years would think to do: be uncomfortable, try new things, and learn from these new experiences.”
