Course Load and Credits

You are required to maintain a full-time course load throughout your semester at the University of Wollongong (UOW). A full-time course load is defined by Arcadia University as 14-16 U.S. semester hours of credit; this is the equivalent of 22-24 units at Wollongong. Refer to the credit translation scale below when selecting your courses:

Australian University Credit Point Units U.S. University Semester Hours of Credit
3 2
4 2.5
6 4
8 5
12 8

Course Restrictions

The following area of study is restricted to major students only:

  • Nursing
  • Creative Arts classes are restricted to those who are majoring in the relevant subject area at their home institution. Also, transcripts must prove that the following pre-requisites have been met:

Choosing Your Courses

You should include at least 8-10 courses on your Preliminary Course Form to allow for scheduling changes, time conflicts, prerequisites or cancellations. Your flexibility is very important to the process.

When selecting your courses from the university's website, you should be aware of some differences in terminology:

Australian Term U.S. Equivalent
Faculty School or College
Course Degree
Subject Course
Course Outline Syllabus
Semester 1 & Autumn Spring Semester
Semester 2 & Spring Fall Semester

From the UOW website,

  • Select a faculty in which you are looking for courses.
  • On the next page, select the appropriate degree for a full list of available courses.
  • You will need to choose a study area when browsing in the Faculty of Arts.
  • Click on the subject code for more detailed information, including:
  • Subject Description
  • Session offered (Spring semester = Autumn; Fall semester = Spring)
  • You can also link directly to a list of subject descriptions. Select the corresponding year and ‘Undergraduate’. You can search for subjects by clicking through each Faculty to view a complete list of subjects available.

Course Approval

After you receive your official UOW Offer Letter, you must submit your UOW Study Plan and UOW will assess this list for approval. About a month after you submit your UOW Study Plan, your Program Manager will email your Study Plan (list of approved courses).

UOW Study Plan must be completed by the following dates:

  • Spring (Semester 1) – November 30
  • Fall (Semester 2) – May 1

Enrollment Process

At the same time that you receive your Study Plan from your Program Manger, you will also receive instructions for UOW's enrollment portal. You are only able to start this process AFTER you have received your COE. Through the enrollment process you will be given your UOW username, password and UOW email address.

The Arcadia University Australia Centre requires that you enroll in only one 100-level type course for the semester. To enroll in additional 100-level courses, you must appeal your timetable with the Senior Coordinator of New South Wales during orientation.

It is your responsibility to make sure that you are registered for a full academic load according to your home school. Please review your course choices with your academic or study abroad advisor, and submit the online course registration form to The College of Global Studies at Arcadia University.

Every effort will be made to place you in the courses you originally request. However, neither UOW nor The College of Global Studies can guarantee approval or placement in any course. Your first choices may not be available due to schedule changes, time conflicts or cancellations. Alternate course approval and flexibility is extremely important.

Other Important Points

Additional course fees may be associated with some of your overseas course work (i.e. courses that include laboratory work, field excursions or theater trips). Please see our fee information online here.

In some cases, UOW will request that you submit syllabi or an updated official transcript. Please have this information available should we need to contact you for this material.

If you are interested in enrolling in studio art, graphic art, art media production, drama, dancing or music courses, you will need to submit a portfolio or audition tape to support your application. Because your work will be sent to UOW, we are unable to return the portfolio.

Arcadia University does not issue pass/fail grades for work completed overseas. If you intend to enroll in a unit that is assessed pass/fail, please contact Arcadia University to discuss the procedures associated with the grade translation.
