Program
The core of each student’s academic program is the course Catalan Labyrinth: An Introduction to Catalan Studies. This course will provide a Catalan language introduction to ensure that students can navigate confidently throughout this recently nominated Capital of the Mediterranean Union, while introducing them to the compelling culture, history, economy, and politics of Catalonia. Participants will engage in lectures, seminars, and field studies that highlight the dynamic nature of the region and its people.
In addition to the four-credit core course offering, all students (except those in the advanced program) are required to enroll in three credits of Spanish language study. The balance of the student’s coursework is determined by the student’s level of Spanish language proficiency. Students will be placed in Spanish language at the appropriate level based upon the results of a placement exam administered during orientation in Barcelona.
Beginning Spanish Proficiency
Students with no prior knowledge of Spanish will have the option of taking classes in English combined with Spanish language study.
Intermediate Spanish Proficiency
Besides the required core-course: The Catalan Labyrinth (taught in English); intermediate-level students can take all coursework in Spanish, or combine courses in Spanish with some courses in English.
Advanced Spanish Proficiency
Students at the most advanced levels can choose from Hispanic Studies courses in Spanish and/or directly enroll in courses at any of the faculties of the University of Barcelona (only academic year and spring students are eligible to take courses at the University of Barcelona).
