Off-site Education Programs
The Center plays a vital role in the delivery of off-site Education courses and programs, as well as the acquisition of state and federally funded grants. Partnerships have been established with local school districts and private educational entities with instruction being delivered in flexible modalities, such as blended and fully online, at convenient off-site locations.
Grants
Accelerated Certification for Educators (ACE) is a $1.3 million grant funded through September 30, 2009. In partnership with the School District of Philadelphia and the Reading School District, this grant offered Special Education certification to present teachers and career-changers.
Gate Opener Project for Early Childhood was awarded to three universities state-wide. A year-long $20,000 grant was designed to support teachers in early childhood centers who are required to become certified by 2011. This grant addresses two areas indicated by this population as high need: assistance in passing the Praxis I and funds for additional expenses such as textbooks. The grant will provide two sessions (fall and spring) of workshops in each of the Praxis I tested areas of writing, mathematics, and reading. In addition, teachers in Arcadia’s off-site certification programs will receive a $100 textbook scholarship each semester.
Certification Initiative in Mathematics and Science (CIMS), a $1.6 million grant, was awarded this year. This three year partnership involves the School District of Philadelphia, Lancaster School District, Reading School District, Allentown Area School District, and the Harrisburg School District, identified by the state as high-need districts. The CIMS program offers secondary certification in mathematics, biology, chemistry and general science to special education teachers in order to become “highly qualified” in a secondary area, as well as for regular education teachers seeking an additional certification.
As a partner with the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Arcadia will offer a Special Education certification and master’s degree to three cohorts of 20 participating in the state’s teacher residency program.
