The minor in Professional Writing prepares you for specialized writing a wide variety of public and professional settings. Learn how to write and edit effectively for print and new media for a range of fields including journalism, law, health care, the non-profit sector, government, and publishing.
A minimum of five courses, or 20 credits, in English and/or Media and Communications with a focus on professional writing. At least two of the courses must be at the 300 level.
Tell true stories with creativity and voice. This workshop explores memoir, personal essays, and other nonfiction forms that use fiction and poetry techniques. You’ll develop your storytelling skills through focused writing, reflection, and revision.
Learn the essentials of journalism, from reporting and interviewing to editing and ethics. This course covers writing for newspapers and magazines, layout basics, and the foundations of strong, responsible journalism.
Write for the digital world with clarity and strategy. This course explores writing for websites, social platforms, and multimedia formats. You’ll learn usability best practices, integrate visuals with text, and build a portfolio of professional digital content.
