Commons: Work Begins on Electrical, Fiber and Water Lines

June 2, 2010 Purnell Cropper

Bulldozers and backhoes are hard at work on the University Commons, and this week most of the work is infrastructure—electrical ducts, fiber and communications network, and water, sanitary and groundwater lines.

One of the initial projects is to reroute the main electrical duct bank, which currently runs along the front of Kuch Center. Trenching began this week along the Dining Complex side of Kuch Field, where the new power line will be buried. Rerouting the lines will require shutting down the power to the campus for a day, currently scheduled for Saturday, June 12.

With the east side of Kuch Center slated as one of the first elements to be constructed, work began this week to tie in sanitary lines for the footprint where the new offices will be added. Manholes and storm water management work also is being done in front of Kuch Center.

The University’s fiber and communications network, which currently runs through the underground tunnel to the Castle, also needs to be rerouted, and this work also is beginning this week.
