Alejandro Fernandez Gutierrez, a Fulbright Scholar and second-year student in Arcadia University’s International Peace and Conflict Resolution master’s program, presented at the 4th Annual Masculinities Conference in La Paz, Bolivia, on Dec. 7. The conference brings together scholars from Bolivia, Peru, Mexico, Argentina and Chile to present research about masculinity in diverse settings across Latin America, with the aim of counteracting colonialist and racist assumptions about Latin American patriarchy. Papers are accepted for presentation at the conference after competitive review.

Fernandez developed his paper, “Violencia, Poder, y Masculinidades en Estados Postcoloniales: Bolivia (Violence, Power, and Masculinity in Postcolonial States: Bolivia),” through coursework in two of his Arcadia classes: Law, Disorder, and Globalization, taught by Dr. Hilary Parsons Dick, and International Security, taught by Dr. Christopher Brown.
