Arcadia University Theater Presents “Spring Awakening,” Feb. 22-25
Arcadia University Theater Arts will perform “Spring Awakening,” based on the play by Frank Wedekind, from Thursday, Feb. 22, to Sunday, Feb. 25, in Spruance Art Center’s Little Theater. The production is directed by Robi Hager, a cast member in the original Broadway production, and features lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik.
“It’s been such a pleasure working on Spring Awakening with such an incredible and talented group of young artists,” said Hager. “This show has been a part of my life for a long time and returning to it as a director this time has taught me how magical and important this story can be for every generation. Come see it, you don’t want to miss it!”
“Spring Awakening” is a coming-of-age musical set in 19th-century Germany. It tells the story of teenagers exploring the confusions of adolescent sexuality as well as the journey from youth into adulthood. Alternative rock and folk rock are utilized throughout the score. The original Broadway production of “Spring Awakening” won eight Tony Awards.
In the dramaturg’s note, Jonathan Shandell, DFA, co-director and associate professor of Theater Arts, writes, “Its message remains relevant to a society that is increasingly banning books from school libraries, restricting access to reproductive care, rolling back LGBTQ+ rights, and denying loving support for trans/questioning youth.”
