Torchia Remembers Artist Pati Hill on Artforum.com
Richard Torchia, director of the Arcadia University Art Gallery, wrote a reflective piece on the death of artist Pati Hill for Artforum.com, the website for the long-running contemporary art magazine Artforum, on Dec. 18. Hill, who died in September, created art using IBM photocopy machines in the mid-1970s. Torchia is working with Arcadia students to develop an exhibition of Hill’s work set to open at Arcadia in 2016, funded by a grant from the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage.
Pati Hill offered at least two explanations for how she, a published writer in her fifties, started to experiment with the photocopier in the early 1970s. One recounts her surprise at noticing images of fingertips in the margins of her copied manuscripts.
