Financial Aid and Scholarships
Financial Aid: A Quick Review
Financial aid is money provided to students to help pay for tuition and living expenses. There are four main types:
- Scholarships and grants: Awarded based on academic performance or financial need. You rarely have to pay back scholarships and grants.
- Loans: Borrowed money that you need to pay back over a number of years, almost always with interest and other fees. Interest amounts vary. For example, the Federal Direct Loan Program offers subsidized (interest paid) and unsubsidized loans for students and parents.
- Student Employment (Work Study): Students may be eligible to apply for a student job on campus and be paid for the hours they work.
Most students combine funds from financial aid with savings and income (their own and/or their family’s) to pay for their degrees.
