Act 48 and Act 45 Information

Act 48 Credit

Act 48 of 1999 requires all Pennsylvania educators holding Pennsylvania public school certification including Instructional I and II, Educational Specialist I and II, Administrative, Supervisory, Letters of Eligibility and all vocational certificates to participate in ongoing professional education.

All certified educators must then complete every five years 180 hours of professional development that is related to an area of the professional educator’s assignment or certification. The 180-hour requirement can be met with six college credits, for the purposes of calculating hours and credits, one credit of collegiate study is equivalent to 30 hours of continuing professional education.

Only successfully completed courses (earning a 'C' grade or better) taken at Arcadia University will be reported to the Pennsylvania Department of Education with proper documentation. All other courses must be reported through the appropriate institution.

Act 48 Reporting

Six credits (2 courses) of successfully completed (grade 'C' or better) coursework taken at Arcadia University will be reported to the Pennsylvania Department of Education each year.

In order to have your coursework reported for Act 48, submit an online request form . You must include your Personal Professional ID in order for your request to be processed.

PLEASE ALLOW AT LEAST 10-14 BUSINESS DAYS for Arcadia to transmit the information.

Students can check their Act 48 credit hours on the Act 48 Professional Education Record Management System (PERMS).

Act 48 CHANGES

The General Assembly passed legislation that permits a professional educator to carry forward 50 hours of continuing professional education credits into the next compliance period if they were obtained during the final two years of the educator’s compliance period and are in excess of the required 180 credit hours for the current compliance period.

Programs at Arcadia University Receiving Act 48 Credit Hours

Collegiate credits may be applied to the continuing education requirements if earned during the current Act 48 compliance period. The credits must relate to the educator’s area of assignment/certification or within a program leading to administrative certification.

Act 45 Credit

All of the preparation/certification, induction and continuing professional education of assistant principals and principals, assistant superintendents and superintendents, IU assistant executive directors and executive directors, and career and vocational technical school directors is governed by the provisions of Act 45. This legislation affects professional educators with administrative certificates who are employed in any of these positions on or after January 1, 2008.

Arcadia University’s Superintendent Letter of Eligibility program and its courses are approved to meet the requirements for Act 45 of 2007 for school and system leaders.
