Teaching and Advising Awards

The recipients of the Teaching, Advising, and Service Awards are selected by the Faculty Awards Committee from a pool of candidates nominated by campus community members. The Committee considers the persuasiveness and strength of the nomination rationale as well as the number of nominations received for each candidate. The Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award (biennial)

  • Every other year, Arcadia University selects a winner of the Christian R. & Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching. This is an opportunity for students to recognize and reward a faculty member who is an especially effective classroom teacher and who has significantly influenced student education at Arcadia.

Lloyd M. Abernethy Outstanding Service Award (bi-annual)

  • In the spring of 1997 Faculty Council voted to create the Faculty Outstanding Service Award. In 1999 the award was given to Lloyd Abernethy and renamed The Lloyd M. Abernethy Faculty Outstanding Service Award in his honor. The Award is presented every two years to a full-time faculty member or faculty librarian who has distinguished her/him/themselves through an exceptional record of service to Arcadia University. A willingness to provide service to the University is regarded as implicit in employment at Arcadia. However, some individuals go beyond normal expectations to truly distinguish themselves in this regard. They help improve substantially one or more aspects of the academic environment, enrich and enliven campus life, or enhance the University’s image and reputation in the external community.

Michael L. Berger Faculty Scholars and Artists Prize (bi-annual)

  • In recognition of the distinguished achievements and service of Dr. Michael L. Berger, Vice President of Academic Affairs (1993 – 2009) and Provost of Arcadia University (2001 – 2009), colleagues, friends, and a grateful community have established the Michael L. Berger Faculty Scholars and Artists Prize to be presented at Graduate Commencement every two years.
  • The Berger Prize will provide peer recognition to an Arcadia University faculty member whose scholarly and artistic work(s) is/are judged to evidence groundbreaking thinking or creative activity that contributes in a significant and innovative manner to knowledge or artistic expression in the recipient’s discipline, and that brings enhanced recognition and distinction to the recipient and the University.

Scholarly and Research Awards

These awards promote research by faculty and students by providing funds in support of scholarly projects. Faculty apply for these awards by submitting a project proposal that includes a rationale for the contemplated activity, a statement of the significance of the work, and a detailed budget. General information is below along with a history of past recipients and their projects.

The Jackson International Fund for Student and Faculty Development (annual)

  • Established in 2014 by the Fourjay Foundation, the Jackson International Fund recognizes Marie-Louise Jackson ’09H and Eugene Jackson ’90H, loyal friends of Arcadia University who exemplified a personal commitment and desire to empower students and faculty to pursue the expansive possibilities of a global education.  A fitting tribute to Marie-Louise Jackson for her role in bringing the first Visiting International Professor to Arcadia, the faculty development award enhances the intellectual diversity of the University by facilitating scholarly exchange between Arcadia faculty and other international institutions. NOTE: The Jackson International Fund also supports international experiences of Graduate and Undergraduate students.
  • The Jackson International Fund provides up to $5,000 of funding for a number of different kinds of activities.

Ellington Beavers Fund for Intellectual Inquiry (annual)

  • The Ellington Beavers Fund for Intellectual Inquiry was established in 1989 by close friends who wished to honor Dr. Beavers, to recognize his leadership as chair of the University’s Board of Trustees for six years, and to sustain his vision in establishing and directing the Arcadia University Research Foundation. The fund will be used to assist the University in achieving our primary goal of enhancing the education of our students, both directly through assistance to student scholars, and indirectly through assistance to the faculty who teach and guide them.

NOTE: The Beavers Fund for Intellectual Inquiry also supports research projects of students. Faculty nominate students who are planning to carry out projects of substantial intellectual inquiry under their supervision.

Thomas Dougherty Endowed Faculty-Student Research Award (annual)

  • In July of 1997, the family and friends of the late Tom Dougherty, an Arcadia University faculty member from 1994 to 1997, established the Dr. Thomas P. Dougherty Endowed Faculty-Student Research Fund. The Award is to be used for “assisting in the education of capable young men and women and the development of [the research potential of] junior faculty members in the sciences,” with preference given to work in the disciplines of chemistry and physics.

Professorships and Fellowships

Professorships and Fellowships are held by faculty for a longer period of time, usually two or three years, after which the chair or fellowship passes to a different faculty member. Award amounts and criteria vary but most require a presentation of the project to the Arcadia community. Basic information and a list of past recipients are below.

Frank and Evelyn Steinbrucker Endowed Chair (2 years)

  • Established by a generous donation from the Steinbrucker Estate, this chair is held by a tenured, senior member of the Arcadia University faculty for a period of two years. Although faculty in all disciplines are eligible, preference is given to an associate or full professor working in the social sciences, arts, or humanities, broadly defined. He or she will have compiled a distinguished record of teaching, professional achievements, and service to the University, and will have shown considerable leadership ability.

Norman Johnston Faculty Fellowship in the Humanities and Social Sciences (2 years)

  • The Johnston Faculty Fellowship honors the late Dr. Norman Johnston, a valued colleague who remained active as a researcher, scholar, professor, author, and university citizen from 1962 to 2012, one of the longest records of service of any faculty member. The purposes of The Dr. Norman Johnston Faculty Fellowship in the Humanities and Social Sciences are to encourage talented and dedicated faculty members to excel in research and scholarship in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and to share their knowledge with the University community. The Johnston Fellowship also brings added prestige to the University and the Johnston Fellow who is selected, and promotes the values of Dr. Norman Johnston, who understood the central role of faculty in the education process, the open exchange of ideas, and the engagement of the entire University

Rosemary and Walter Blankley Endowed Chair in Education (3 years)

  • The Rosemary and Walter Blankley Endowed Chair in Education was established in 2013 by a most generous donation from Education alumna, Rosemary Deniken Blankley ’57, and Walter Blankley. This Chair is held by a member of the Arcadia University School of Education faculty for a period of three years. The purpose of this fund is to support the research and projects of the selected faculty member in order to enhance the instruction and learning experienced by students in the School of Education. The fund and its administration is intended to capture the spirit of Rosemary and Walter Blankley’s deep and abiding belief in the transformative power of education.
