Loury on Ch. 29: ‘What Are We Going To Do’ for Black Males in School?

Dr. Doreen Loury, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Director of Act 101, was one of a group of educators who spoke on Nov. 6 at a film screening of the film Beyond the Bricks, on black males in the school system, which premiered at the Community College of Philadelphia.

Fox Ch. 29’s  report—’Beyond The Bricks’ Debuts In Philly: Documentary Examines Schools Leaving Blacks Behind—reports that “statistics show that they are 50 percent less likely to graduate high school than other males in high school. And the number is even worse here in Philly. Fox 29’s Thomas Drayton shows how this documentary is hoping to find some solutions to this growing problem.” See the Fox video.

“They didn’t get into this mess by themselves,” says Loury. “So in my way, I look at the adults and say, ‘What are we going to do to help them out? What are we going to do to give them a ray hope?'”

Loury also was part of  the Sisters: Can We Talk?, an event held at Arcadia University with the Association of Black Women in Higher Education (ABWHE) and the Black Male Development Symposium. The event was covered in Scoop U.S.A. (Philadelphia) on Oct. 29.

“The symposium engaged women in an intergenerational discussion exploring sisterhood and enhanced their skills to assist themin better communicating within their community,” Scoop reported.
