Brinker Addresses Financial Services Industry on Health Care Reform

Thomas M. Brinker Jr., Professor and Accounting Program Coordinator, presented on Thursday, Feb. 17, at the annual 2011 Arizona Institute, one of the premier educational events in the financial services industry.

Brinker has been invited twice in the last three years, and this year he spoke in Tucson on the topic, “How Will Health Care Reform Impact Our Clients? Avoiding the Traps and Capitalizing on the Treasures.” He talked about continuing Congressional legislative volatility, new jobs incentives, the payroll tax (Social Security) tax cut, retained worker business credit, the small business health care tax credit, the health care coverage individual mandate. He also addressed a broader Medicare tax base, including the additional Medicare tax on wage earners, the unearned income Medicare contributions tax, and the combined impact of the two measures.

Brinker also notes that health care costs for children under 27 may be subject to state taxation. “Many states are not conforming with the provision in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, which requires insurers that provide group health coverage for dependent children to continue such coverage until the dependent turns 26 years old.”
