Art Gallery: Atlas of Nowhere, Sept. 23

By Purnell T. Cropper | September 21, 2010

Charts of real and imaginary locations created by map-makers from Philadelphia, across the United States, and around the world will be on view at the Arcadia University Art Gallery as it opens its 2010-11 season with Nowhere: Selections from the Archives of the Hand Drawn Map Association, curated by association founder Kris Harzinski, on Sept. 23.

The Hand Drawn Map Association is an ongoing archive of user-submitted maps and other diagrams created by hand. It was founded in 2008 by Harzinski, a graphic designer and artist who recently relocated to Philadelphia from Lancaster, Pa. The collection now includes examples ranging from spontaneously rendered directional maps to those charting fictional sites and unusual places ranging from the surface of the body, dream landscapes, and the cosmos.

The exhibition coincides with a new publication documenting the archives of the HDMA titled From Here to There (Princeton Architectural Press), to be released in October 2010. For more information and Gallery hours, visit www.arcadia.edu/gallery.
