Sixth graders from Anna B. (AB) Day School in Philadelphia will visit Arcadia to get a peek at college life and participate in educational activities as part of an ongoing partnership with the University on Tuesday, April 26. Funded by Lawrence J. and Anne Rubenstein Charitable Foundation, the Professional Development School Partnership has given Arcadia Education majors valuable integrative experience while also benefiting the students and teachers at AB Day.

During their campus visit, AB Day students will attend a class with Education majors; participate in a problem-solving and teamwork workshop created by Dr. Kim Dean, Assistant Professor of Education, and facilitated by her students; enjoy a tour of the Castle and the Art Gallery; and learn about college life.

“This project fulfills two major objectives of the University,” says Barbara Sheehan, Director in the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs. “It provides teacher training that prepares students for the challenges of urban education and involves undergraduate students in community engagement.”

“By spending time in the classroom and facilitating the after-school art club, our students have learned about teaching in an urban setting,” adds Kathy Trainor, Instructor in the Education Department. “The partnership has also allowed the students and community of AB Day School to experience enrichment opportunities with an emphasis on science and the arts.”

Arcadia Trustee Dr. Joycellen “Jey” Young Auritt ’71, who is also on the board of the Rubenstein Foundation, helped to shepherd this grant, which is in its third year. So far, the grant has helped to establish a weekly after-school art club staffed by education majors, giving them real-world experience in their field. A peace garden, which will be created by AB Day teachers and students, also is in the works. Some of Arcadia’s pre-service teachers have written mini-grants that will be used to purchase materials for use in AB Day School classrooms, including math manipulatives and science kits that allow students to complete hands-on projects. Additional funds will be used to obtain materials for the school’s newly renovated library.
