Dr. Favian Alejandro Martín, assistant professor of criminology and criminal justice, published an article titled “The Coverage of American Indians and Alaskan Natives in Criminal Justice and Criminology Introductory Textbooks” in Critical Criminology: An International Journal. To accomplish his research, he conducted a content analysis on 31 introductory criminal justice and criminology textbooks; the findings reveal that these textbooks under-represent American Indians and Alaskan Natives although individuals in these groups experience high levels of crime, victimization, and justice-related problems.

In addition to this article, Dr. Martín wrote two book chapters in American Indians at Risk, edited by Dr. Jeffrey Ian Ross, professor in the School of Criminal Justice at the University of Baltimore. The book provides an overview of the myriad of contemporary social problems that plague the American Indian population, which can be traced to the social ills of colonialism. The two chapters that Dr. Martín contributed focus on Native juvenile delinquency and mental health issues confronting American Indians.
