Otieno Presents on Teaching Africa Through Film

By Christopher Sarachilli | January 4, 2016

In November, Alex Otieno, instructor of Sociology and International Peace and Conflict Resolution, presented “Using film about Africa to foster transformative experiences in sociology courses” at the African Studies Association annual meeting in San Diego, Calif.

Otieno’s presentation was part of a session on Teaching Africa through Film, which looked at the use of film to teach complex topics about Africa. Otieno’s paper specifically examined how topics, such as apartheid, neo-colonialism, and race, could be examined in film through two areas: human rights and sociology.
