Students Present Research at College of Physicians Section on Public Health and Preventive Medicine

Ten Master of Public Health students at Arcadia University presented research at the College of Physicians in Philadelphia’s Student Research Section on Public Health and Preventative Medicine. The student presentations, listed below, focused on a variety of important public health issues, including probiotic use, diabetes self-management behaviors, addiction management, and smoking cessation:

  • Casey Sawyer ’23MPH, DPT presented on “Supplemental Probiotic Use, Adequate Daily Fiber Intake, and Risk for Moderate Depressive Symptoms in a Nationally Representative Sample of US Adults.”
  • Vivian Cheng ’21MPH, ’23MMS presented on “Diabetes Self- Management Behaviors Among Asian Americans.”
  • Sarah Cooney ’21MPH, ’23MMS presented on “Current and Past Oral Contraceptive Use Is Associated With Mild Depressive Symptoms in a Nationally Representative Sample.”
  • John Deep ’22DPT, MPH presented on “Direct Access Physical Therapy Policy and Low Back or Neck Pain Disability: An Ecological Study.”
  • Kate Thomas ’23MPH, DPT presented on “Economic Policy Analysis on City Budgets and Rates of Community Violence.”
  • Marina Kovalenko ’21MPH, ’23MMS presented on “Opportunities For Addiction Management In Hospitalized Cases Of Infective Endocarditis In People Who Inject Drugs: A Systematic Review.”
  • McKenna M. Welsh ’22MPH, DPT presented on “Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status, Advance Care Planning, & End-of-Life Decisions in Cardiopulmonary Patients.”
  • Michael Gao ’21MPH, ’23MMS presented on “The Effectiveness of Smoking Cessation Interventions in Promoting Long-Term Quitting Habits: A Systematic Review.”
  • Brittany Imel ’21MPH, ’23MMS presented on “Food Security and Medication Adherence in Young and Middle-Aged Adults with Diabetes.”
  • Hannah Alexander ’21MPH, ’23MMS presented on “The internet & the gluten-free diet: How completely websites convey diet information and address diet adherence factors.”

The event was held virtually, with students posting short videos online instead of presenting posters in-person. The presentations are available on the College of Physicians of Philadelphia’s Youtube channel.

The sessions showcase regional public health research by students and professionals from related disciplines at Arcadia University, Drexel University, La Salle University, Temple University, Thomas Jefferson University, University of Pennsylvania, and West Chester University.
