ABWHE 10th Annual National Conference Brings “Sister Power 2017” to Philadelphia

Celebrate “Sister Power” in Philadelphia with the Association of Black Women in Higher Education (ABWHE) as they honor Poet Laureate Sonia Sanchez, author and activist, at their 10th annual conference from Oct. 18 to 20 at the Sonesta Hotel and Temple University Center City Campus, Philadelphia.

This year’s theme is “Sister Power 2017: ‘Lift as We Climb’ – A Right, A Responsibility, A Privilege…,” where presenters–including Sanchez, health advocate Rev. Lorina Marshall-Blake, and author Dr. Sara Willie-LeBretton–will discuss career development, health and wellness, the historical impact of African American women in academia, social identity, leadership, and the increase of diversity in academia.

On Wednesday, Oct. 18, an opening ceremony will be held at the African American Museum in Philadelphia, where Anita Washington, administrative assistant of Historical and Political Studies, and Dr. Doreen Loury, assistant professor of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice and Director of Pan African Studies, will be honored as African American Women Veterans in Higher Education. Additionally, Dr. Angela McNeil, director of Arcadia’s Act 101/Gateway to Success program, will be presenting a workshop during the conference entitled “Strong Black Woman..Why are You too Stressed to Be Blessed?”
