English
Bachelor of Arts in English; Minors in English, Professional Writing or Creative Writing.
Overview
The English Department offers British, American and World Literature courses and a range of creative and professional writing courses. The English major is designed to give students a strong foundation in literary theory and interpretation, writing, and oral communication. All English courses from first-year writing to senior thesis stress critical thinking and problem-solving as essential elements of the composing and interpreting processes. With careful advising, each student can plan a curriculum based on his/her interests and career goals. Students who are interested in studying abroad, usually in the junior year, should visit Pathways to Study Abroad for more information.
A requirement of the English major is a career internship, during which students use their analytical and writing skills in a guided experience in the work world. Recent interns have worked at NFL Films, Merck, and The Philadelphia Daily News.
Minors are offered in English, Creative Writing, and Professional Writing.
With an average of 14 students in a class, students can easily get to know their professors and classmates. Most courses are seminars or workshops in which students engage in small group discussions of texts, make oral presentations and critique each other's writing.
Arcadia has a chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society.
The Arcadia University Writing Center is available to assist students with writing in any course. Students in any department can apply to work in the Writing Center as early as the sophomore year.
Students are encouraged to participate in the Montgomery County Poet Laureate Program.
"I am a transfer student. The experience I have had here at Arcadia University's English Department surpassed my expectations. I have had a great experience with the English department faculty at Arcadia. Each professor I have had has been willing to help me, on top of being incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the topic he or she was teaching. Dr Chauhan is a deep well of intriguing facts/information; Dr. Weiner forces students to probe their imaginations for a deeper understanding of literature and of themselves; Professor Hordis stands out to me because of her ability to connect to her students. Her enthusiasm and profound knowledge engage students, helping them not just to learn, but to enjoy learning." — Larissa Newman"The English Department is full of committed teachers who want to transform their students from just freely thinking individuals to first-rate expositors who can articulately express their own thoughts." — Charles D. Burnette Jr.

Pathways to Study Abroad
The English Department encourages its majors to study abroad, primarily in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Generally, the junior year is the most convenient time for English majors to study abroad, for a semester, a summer, or an entire academic year. With prior approval, students can take courses to fulfill any University-wide requirement. Nearly all required major courses can be taken abroad. The Capstone Seminar, EN 490, however, must be taken in Glenside.
Visit Pathways to Study Abroad for more information and suggested course sequences. Since it is important that students plan ahead for study abroad, they should consult with their advisers as soon as possible and make their intentions known to the Department Chair and the Director of International Services.
