Bridging the Distance

Beyond the obvious fear and anxiety that comes from a global pandemic, all over people have been mourning the loss of various events needing to be canceled in order to combat the further spread of coronavirus. Being a final semester senior, I too feel the sting of not being able to attend Honors Convocation, run the English faculty appreciation brunch, present my thesis, and of postponing the traditional graduation ceremony. But what hurts most keenly is simply not being able to see the people who have made my past four years at Arcadia great. ⁣⁣

Though nothing can truly replace face-to-face interaction, we are lucky we live in a time where technology is so readily available and can bridge the distance corona has forced upon us. I FaceTime and Skype with my friends often, but last week my friend Laura and I decided to start up a farm in the farming simulation video game Stardew Valley using their multiplayer mode. Not only is Stardew Valley’s relaxing gameplay a much-needed outlet for my nerves during this uncertain time, but so is getting to spend time with a friend, even if in a virtual space.⁣
