Old Artwork Uncovered in Castle Restroom

While renovating the first floor women’s restroom in Grey Towers Castle, Dave Dillon, a painter from Guilden Painting, discovered a long-obscured painting above the door transom. A pair of lions had been standing guard in the mural hidden from view for many years beneath several layers of paint.

“Over break, we renovated the restroom, taking out the drop ceiling and reconfiguring the bathroom for ADA accessibility,” says Tom Macchi, Associate Vice President for Facilities and Capital Planning. “Once we discovered that there was a coat of arms beneath the layers of paint, we painstakingly removed the remainder of the layers to reveal the art. Women who use the restroom can now enjoy more of the original artwork of the Castle.”
