Arcadia University celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 18, by collecting shoes and supplies for Haiti, by donating gently used items for numerous local charities, by bringing in boxes of paper for shredding, and by packing soup for shut-ins. (Photos.)

Sleeping bags, tents,  medical supplies and baby food can still be taken to the Community Service Office through Wednesday, says Cindy Rubino, Community Service Coordinator, who is coordinating with Haitian Professionals of Philadelphia and AMURT, a direct care agency in Haiti. The Community Service Office coordinated the events, with the “Shredding Event and One-Stop Drop” in the parking area of Murphy Hall and the soup packaging in Grey Towers Castle.

“It’s good that we were able to add efforts for Haiti and adapt to people in need when they’re in need of us,” says Kasey Lynch ’12, the MLK student coordinator. “I think that it’s good for everyone to be able to clean out their houses and also get a lot of things to a lot of local agencies in one event.”

People who are interested in helping can make an unrestricted donation to the International Response Fund at www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767). The public can also help by texting “Haiti” to 90999 to send a $10 donation (added to cell bill) to the Red Cross, through an effort backed by the U.S. State Department. Funds will go to support American Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.
