Live from Italy, Turkey, Singapore—It’s Our New Commons!

By Purnell T. Cropper | January 20, 2012

Thanks to a new high-definition video-teleconferencing system installed in the Commons Great Room and the new wireless system installed throughout the campus by Global Information Services, Arcadia’s global family will be an integral part of the Dedication of the Commons at 10 a.m.on Monday, Jan. 23. The flags of Italy, Turkey and Singapore already are flying outside at the bridge entrance to the Commons, beside the flags of Arcadia, Pennsylvania and the United States in honor of the global participants as well as Dedication keynote speaker U.S. Senator Robert P. Casey Jr.

“We open our new building demonstrating what a ‘commons’ has always been to society—the central place where people gather together to connect with neighbors and conduct commerce, to share news and discuss the important topics of the day, and to hear from visitors and leaders about matters important to the community. So it is fitting that we hear from members of our global family on this milestone date in the history of our University,” says Arcadia University President Carl (Tobey) Oxholm III. “We also welcome faculty, staff, alumni, students and friends from around the world who will be watching live over the Internet.” Watch the ceremony—live or at a later time—at www.ustream.tv/channel/arcadia-commons-dedication.

On Monday’s the special guests will include:

  • Tina Rocchio, Resident Director of the Arcadia University Center for Italian Studies in Rome, Italy. The Center was established in direct collaboration with one of Rome’s most dynamic and innovative universities, the Università degli Studi Roma Tre. The center is located on the campus in the heart of Rome.
  • Alper Camci, Ph.D., Academic Director of Arcadia University Programs in Turkey. The College of Global Studies’ newly established center in Istanbul was created from an exclusive collaboration with Kadir Has University. The Center is situated centrally on the Kadir Has campus along the harbor inlet called the Golden Horn.
  • President Vincent Ho and members of the Arcadia University Singapore Alumni Club, most of whom are graduates of Arcadia’s International M.B.A. program taught in Singapore.

The dedication day kicks off with a Community Pancake Breakfast at 9 a.m., followed by the Ribbon Cutting at 9:45 a.m. and the Dedication Ceremony at 10 a.m. Refreshments and tours run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
