During Homecoming weekend, the Athletic Hall of Fame welcomed new members in a ceremony that took place on the second floor of the Library. Watch video of the induction ceremony.

The inductees included:

Tom DeGeorge joined the men’s soccer program in Fall 2001 as a transfer student. He was a high-scoring midfielder, whose offensive skills contributed to the success of the undefeated team in 2001. As a captain, DeGeorge led the team with 18 goals and 12 assists in 2002. He was Arcadia’s first male athlete to be named an All-American and was a two-time All-American. In addition, DeGeorge was recognized twice as a first-team Regional All-American, and was named Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Player of the Year and first-team All-PAC both years he played for Arcadia University.

Ann Franklin-Smith was a four-year starting pitcher in softball and played goalie on the field hockey team. During her career, she served as captain of both teams. Playing in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II, she earned the Individual Sports Award all four years and was named the Player of the Year in 1986 and 1987, and she was selected to the All-Star-Team for three years. She received the Beaver College Award for Best Female Athlete in the Class of 1987. A career highlight was participating in the 1985 NAIA National Championship Tournament.

Carol L. Jones played field hockey and basketball for four years, and softball and lacrosse for two. She was captain of the field hockey team in her senior year and selected for all college hockey for four years. Having earned 15 letters in high school, Jones’s combined experiences led her to 15 years of coaching lacrosse and field hockey and teaching for 30 years. Dedicated and persistent despite serious health issues in recent years, Jones has learned to play golf one-handed.

Dr. Emily Mackinnon, affectionately called “Mrs. Mac,” is credited for the leadership of Physical Education at Beaver College. From the late 1940s through the mid-1960s, she was the Department Chair. Mackinnon earned two bachelor’s degrees—one in English from the University of Oregon and one in Physical Education from Wellesley College in Physical Education—a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and a doctorate in Education from Columbia University. She officiated many games and also was a national leader in field hockey with a reputation of professional accomplishment and excellence.

Bea Markwick played both field hockey and lacrosse for four years, and graduated cum laude. As a coach, her athletic accomplishments are substantial. She won her first field hockey championship in 1958 at Collingswood High School. Markwick coached the first of four undefeated field hockey teams in 1963, and eventually coached a total of 16 field hockey championships and 10 lacrosse championships, including four lacrosse state titles. She started women’s lacrosse at Collingswood and founded the Delaware Valley Lacrosse League. Described by classmates, colleagues and players as very intelligent, caring and understanding, she made a difference to generations of women.

Tom Matthews played on the men’s basketball team for four years, scoring 1,172 points, and was instrumental in starting the men’s baseball team during his senior year. He set a basketball record with 19 assists in a game. Matthews received Second-Team All Keystone Athletic Conference honors as a freshman, and for two weeks led the country in free throws with a 93.9 percentage. Matthews served as captain in basketball and baseball, and as a star pitcher for the earliest baseball team, he helped establish the roots of our program with little in the way of institutional resources.

Shirley Liddle joined the Beaver College community as Director of Athletics and Recreation in 1993 as the Kuch Athletic and Recreation Center opened. She has excellent credentials and athletics experience, having coached tennis, volleyball and basketball. She served two terms as President of the PAC and was Chair of the NCAA Financial Aid Committee. Liddle guided Beaver College’s NCAA membership as an inaugural member of the PAC and most significantly was instrumental in Arcadia’s membership in the MAC.

The 2002 Arcadia University men’s soccer team finished 21-4 and ranked #7 in the nation. Advancing to the NCAA Tournament—further than any Pennsylvania Athletic Conference team up to that point in the 12 years of conference history—the team captured their second successive PAC title and moved on to the NCAA Tournament’s Elite 8. Coach Tom Carlin ’99, ’02M.Ed., earned the PAC Coach of the Year for three consecutive years.
