More than 200 students and alumni came poised to make an impression at Arcadia University’s 2013 Spring Internship and Career Fair on March 5. Résumés ready, pitches polished, they met and mingled with representatives from the nearly 40 businesses and non-profit organizations looking to fill internships and hire full- and part-time employees.

A connection can lead to a career. Just ask Kevin Janus ’09, who made his first connection with his current employer, Prudential, at one of Arcadia’s bi-annual internship and career fairs. After speaking with the recruiter and submitting a résumé he crafted with help from the Office of Career Education, Janus landed a position, and seamlessly transitioned from full-time student to financial adviser.

In his role as manager of financial services at Prudential in Chalfont, Pa., Janus returned to Arcadia to recruit a new generation of financial advisers. Prudential is one of a wide range of regional employers who regularly attend Arcadia’s recruiting events in the hope of hiring Arcadia students from a variety of academic disciplines.

Corporate Communications major Emily Duffield ’13 identified and researched 19 potential employers before attending. With the goal of landing a full-time job before graduation in mind, she worked with the Office of Career Education to ensure she was prepared. She met with Cynthia Nichols, Manager of the Office of Career Education, to perfect her résumé and attended a preliminary Career Fair meeting to get networking tips and practice her 30-second elevator pitch.

The fair isn’t just for undergraduates. In fact, some business and non-profit organizations are looking for candidates from specific programs. Sue Collins, a Human Resource Specialist at Easter Seals, attends the fair every year in search of students in the Physical Therapy or Special Education graduate programs.

Back for the second year in a row, William Buckalew, Chief Operating Officer of Comm Solutions, looked for students from a variety of majors. So far, Comm Solutions has hired two Arcadia alumni.

“We’ve been very happy with the graduates we’ve gotten from Arcadia University and they have some of the things that are most important to us: bright, energetic, and hardworking,” he says. “We’re very happy with our participation at this event.”

Lunch and Learn: Catapult Your Career with Volunteer Experience

A panel of volunteerism experts will discuss how service experience can lead to a career on Tuesday, April 2, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Castle Dining Room. The lunch and learn includes free pizza. Register online by Friday, March 29.
