On Oct. 28, the Sociology, Gender and Women’s Studies, and Pan-African Studies Programs welcomed Nigerian LGBTQ activist Brother Davis Mac-Iyalla, who spoke to the Arcadia community about his advocacy for the dignity and rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people in Africa. Sharing his story, Mac-Iyalla highlighted the dangers LGBTQ people face in Africa and spoke from the heart as a resource for those who may be struggling to reconcile sexuality and spirituality.

Mac-Iyalla is internationally renowned for his tireless activism for the African LGBTQ community, which spans 20 years and has remained steadfast in spite of significant opposition from government and religious organizations. Following imprisonment, violent attacks, and a string of death threats, he fled Africa for asylum in the UK. Mac-Iyalla has served as a leader in the Church of Nigeria and the Anglican Church in the UK where he now resides.
