Landman Library hosted the first Silent Writing Retreat on Arcadia University’s campus on June 5, with eight faculty and staff members working on projects ranging from editing manuscripts to completing grant proposals in a silent, supportive, collaborative environment.

“Writing is often lonely, and often it is hard to find the right space and time,” said organizer Michelle Reale, associate professor and faculty librarian for English and Music. “Knowing that at an appointed time and place colleagues will gather for the sole purpose of creating work catalyzes the process. It is one of the reasons people go to cafes to write: Somehow, there is a comfort in being among people, doing your work with no pressure to have to socialize.”

The retreat was so successful that the Beaver College Room will be available every Monday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Aug. 21, so the Arcadia community can gather to work.
