On Monday, Jan. 15, Arcadia University is honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a remembrance on campus, a recognition ceremony with Cheltenham’s NAACP and local and state government officials, and a free community shredding and donation event.

The Community and Civic Engagement Center (CCEC) hosts its annual MLK Day of Service Repurposing, eWaste, and Shredding event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public is invited to donate gently used items to fulfill the wish lists of local nonprofit organizations, including Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery and Delaware Counties, The Baby Bureau, Cradles to Crayons, Philly Paws, and Philadelphia Reads. In particular this year, donations of winter coats (for adults and children), baby formula, diapers, and wipes are needed to support families relocated to the area from Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. Arcadia’s Music program would like to invite the Arcadia community to Murphy Hall for a remembrance event beginning at 10:45 a.m. as part of the national America Sings Together. This event asks communities across the nation to sing Amazing Grace at 11 a.m. in each time zone. Contact Assistant Professor of Music Elizabeth Murphy for more details.

From 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Great Room, the community is invited to the 8th annual Rev. Dr. MLK Jr. Holiday Recognition Program, hosted by Arcadia’s Office of Institutional Diversity and Cheltenham’s NAACP. Local officials will be in attendance, including State Senator Art Haywood (D-4), State Representative Steve McCarter (D-154) and his wife Deborah, and Springfield Township Commissioner Mr. Eddie Graham, Esq.
