The second edition of Abbey Ryan ’03’s painting collection “the light/the shade” is showing as a solo exhibition at the Quick Center at St. Bonaventure University through June 2. The exhibition is the culmination of a 2017 research trip to Patmos, Greece, and is also a part of Ryan’s one-a-day painting project.

Ryan’s research and collection is supported by the Dr. Norman Johnson Faculty Fellowship in the Humanities and Social Sciences, given to dedicated faculty members to excel in their research in the humanities and social sciences. While creating “the light/the shade,” Ryan was informed by Dr. Johnson’s work on the evolution of prison architecture, monastic life, and solitary confinement.

Ryan spoke at an Artist Gallery Talk at the Quick Center on April 11, where she discussed the artistic process and her experiences in Patmos.

The first edition of “the light/the shade” was on view at Arcadia in 2017.
