Register Now for Fall 2021 LOVE Pilot Program
What is LOVE?
The Living Our Values Experience (LOVE) Pilot Program, entering its second year, was created in response to the Black Lives Matter and racial reckoning movements of 2020 by the newly minted Center for Teaching, Learning, and Mentoring. The program brings together students, faculty, and staff to do antiracist work, study, and develop practices and interconnections between personal, interpersonal, and structural systems of discrimination and oppression, including bias, stereotype, prejudice, microaggressions, privilege, and power.
Who can participate in LOVE?
The LOVE Pilot Program is open to the entire Arcadia community and is an opportunity for graduate/undergraduate students, staff, and faculty to collaborate on ways to strengthen the Arcadia community on issues of identity, racism, and systemic discrimination, and to examine their own role within society as a change agent.
How often will we meet?
Full participants of the LOVE Pilot Program will meet in either virtual or in-person formats on Wednesdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. from Sept. 8 to Dec. 8. The program also offers three virtual Teach-Ins that are open to the entire Arcadia community and will be recorded and housed on the CTLM web page (dates and times TBA).
Do I get academic credit for participation?
There are several credit-bearing options for LOVE participation this semester, including a University Seminar and an opportunity to fulfill the GCE requirement. Click here for the listing of affiliated courses. Also, your advisor can let you know if any of these options will work in your schedule.
Does it matter what race or ethnicity I am?
The more voices represented in LOVE, the better.
What is the time commitment?
Our weekly meetings are 90 minutes, and there may be some weeks when you will do some outside research to support your working group or engage with other participants outside of the regular meetings.
Does the program last all year or just one term?
LOVE runs in both the spring and fall semesters. Participants can choose to do both semesters, or just one, as their schedule allows. You only register for one term at a time.
How many people will be in the program?
It is hard to say how large the group might be this term! But we do know there will be plenty of time spent in smaller working groups, in addition to large group conversations.
Is the program for any major?
Yes! In fact, the more parts of the Arcadia community we have represented in the room, the more we can learn, and the more we can do (and undo!) together.
How will joining this project help me achieve my academic and/or career goals?
Having the skills and capacity to engage in deeper conversations about race, and to analyze and understand how racism functions and how to change the systems and structures that perpetuate racial inequity, is highly desirable in just about every profession.
How do I join?
To register for the fall term of the LOVE Pilot Program, fill out this form by Sept. 3. If you are interested in credit-bearing options, check the course box on the form, but also, alert your advisor. You can register for most of the courses through self-service, except for GCR101. For that course email daym@arcadia.edu to be placed on the registration list.
