Arcadia Students Awarded Gilman Scholarship to Study Abroad

By Caitlin Burns | January 12, 2016

The following Arcadia University students are among approximately 1,600  undergraduates across the U.S. selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship in the 2015-16 academic year. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the scholarship provides funding to study abroad. Gilman scholarships broaden the student population that participates in education abroad by supporting undergraduates who have been traditionally underrepresented and those who might not study or intern abroad due to financial constraints.

  • Maya Bowdre ’17, of Lancaster, Texas,  a global legal studies major, attended Swansea University in the United Kingdom in fall 2015.
  • Brittney Brown ’17, of Plainfield, N.J. a corporate communication major, attended the University of Cape Town in South Africa in fall 2015.
  • Aneesah Gibbons ’17, of Trenton, N.J., a global legal studies major, attended Yonsei University in South Korea in fall 2015.
  • Najmah Perkins ’16, of Philadelphia, an international studies major, attended Yonsei University in South Korea in fall 2015.  Perkins also received an additional Gilman Critical Need Language Scholarship.
  • Tatiana Redden ’17, of Philadelphia, a sociology major, attended the University of Cape Town in South Africa in fall 2015.
  • Claudia Segura ’18, of Great Neck, N.Y., a political science major, will attend the University of Cape Town in South Africa in spring 2016.

Gilman scholars receive up to $8,000 for a study abroad or internship program costs.

“Study abroad is a special experience for every student who participates,” said Benjamin Gilman, who retired in 2002 after serving in the House of Representatives for 30 years and chairing the House Foreign Relations Committee. “Living and learning in a vastly different environment of another nation not only exposes our students to alternate views, but also adds an enriching social and cultural experience.”

The competition for summer or fall of 2016 closes March 1, 2016. Contact the Office of International Affairs for more details about the Gilman application and study abroad opportunities.
