Dr. Hickman Receives 2021-2022 Steve Goldberg Faculty Development Award

Dr. Peggy Hickman, associate professor of Education, received the 2021-2022 Steve Goldberg Faculty Development Award for her project to revise pre- and in-service educator preparation and development programs in relation to social justice and culturally responsive practices in education. Dr. Hickman plans to focus on analyzing and revising programs she directs to align them better with the School of Education’s adaptive strategy themes and goals.

The award is named after Dr. Steve Goldberg, who was an Arcadia adjunct professor of Education who passed from cancer in 2006. The award is presented every year with an amount that is determined by the investment’s funds. For the 2021-22 year the amount is $1,680. 

“I met Dr. Goldberg during my first year at Arcadia and admired his advocacy for students with disabilities and his work with our graduate students seeking supervisory certification,” said Dr. Hickman. “I am honored that the committee viewed my application as aligned with his advocacy and worthy of supporting.”

Dr. Hickman’s research focuses on multicultural special education and educator preparation and leadership related to diverse and multilingual/multicultural populations in Pre-K to 12th grade settings. She has co-authored publications on literacy interventions with emergent bilingual elementary children and publications with students in Arcadia’s Doctor of Education Leadership program. Dr. Hickman also taught children for nine years in both English and bilingual settings.

Dr. Hickman holds a doctorate in Multicultural Special Education and master of Education in Educational Administration from the University of Texas, Austin, as well as a master of Education. in Bilingual/Elementary Education from Arizona State University.
