Arcadia University’s College of Health Sciences and Physical Therapy Department present a Graduate Colloquium on Thursday, March 20, with physiotherapists from Queen Mary’s Hospital in London Sara Smith, mCSP, HCPC and Kate Lancaster, mCSP, HCPC. The colloquium is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Commons Great Room and will focus on patients with lower limb amputation and patients with phantom limb pain.

In her talk, “The Early Physiotherapy Management of the Patient with a Lower LimbAmputation,” Smith, the amputee therapy team leader at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton, will discuss management of patients with lower limb amputation and the current practice considering oedema (fluid retention) management, early mobilization, and assessment and preparation for prosthetic rehabilitation. She serves as an executive member of the British Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Amputee Rehabilitation (BACPAR) as the guidelines coordinator leading the review and update of the clinical guidelines for pre- and postoperative management of adults with lower limb amputation.

Lancaster, a physiotherapist on the amputee therapy team at Queen Mary’s Hospital, presents “Graded Motor Imagery (GMI) – How It Can Be Used in the Treatment of PhantomLimb Pain,” where she will examine the background of GMI, its theory, and stages of intervention, along with how it is used at Roehampton and a case study. Lancaster has developed guidelines on phantom limb pain treatment and is using GMI effectively as part of its treatment. Smith supports the therapy team that provides an elective placement for Arcadia’s program, and Lancaster supervises Arcadia students while at Queen Mary’s Hospital.

The purpose of the colloquium, which is co-sponsored by the Office of Graduate Studies, is to bring interested learners in touch with leaders and scholars of various disciplines. Attendance provides one hour of Act 48 professional development credit and light refreshments will be served.
